March-April Focus - Deacons' Fund Focus

The Deacon's focus in March and April is LITA - Love Is The Answer. LITA is working to improve the quality of life of lonely and isolated elderly persons living in care facilities by connecting volunteers to visit one on one with a LITA client for a minimum of 30 minutes per week. Approximately 40% of the volunteers include their own special pet in their visits; LITA clients who have had pets welcome the opportunity to bond with another pet. LITA also coordinates a gift drive during the holiday season.

LITA was founded in 1975 by Mae Wygant. Mae had been volunteering at a nursing home in Novato and became aware of the deep loneliness and sense of isolation felt by many of the residents. She began to recruit friends and fellow church members to volunteer their time to visit residents one-on-one. Today, LITA's volunteers visit residents at skilled nursing and assisted living facilities, retirement residences and board and care facilities. Consider giving a donation to this cause by using the GREEN Deacons envelope during offering.

During the next forty days (excluding Sundays) we move through the Season of Lent. The next six weeks create an opportunity to slow down, to pause and to listen to the voice of the One who has called each of us by name. Lent is an intentional time when God's Spirit calls us to pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

Lent has been called the springtime of the church. In fact, Lent comes from old English, "lencten," meaning to lengthen - reminding us that daylight expands as we move from Winter to Spring. As the days lengthen, we are asked to reflect on our lives as we move from gestation to birth, from searching to discovery, from wilderness to wilds, from wasteland to abundance.

You are invited to join us for worship Sunday at 10AM:

March 7th: Mariners Sunday, an ecumenical worship inviting members/friends from Bay Area yacht clubs. Music is provided by the Sons of the Sea from the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco.

March 14th: Communion Sunday

March 21st: Guitar Sunday

March 28th: Palm Sunday

April 4th: REVISED Easter Service, one service will be held at 10:00am - a children's Easter Egg hunt will be held after the service.

St. Luke's Prayer Blankets/Shawls has been a great new ministry to those who are ill or undergoing medical treatment. Eighteen were given out last year and the ‘thank you's' received from the recipients have been so appreciative.

Thank you to these lovely ladies who have been knitting up a storm: Tonya Church, Marilyn Mulder, Carol Mayer, Jan Smith, Mary Beth Spiker, Mary Dill, Holly Kuhlman Katie Woolard, and Jean McKechnie - apologies if we have missed a name or two!

The Deacons of St. Luke Presbyterian Church are a group of twelve members nominated and elected by the church membership. Our duties are to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.

Our Deacons Fund donations (donations collected from the green offering envelopes located in the pews) are used to support various community organizations ministering to those in need.

Check out our new collection of greeting cards in the narthex. These un-used cards are available for your use to send to members and friends who are in need of cheer. One of our St. Luke Visitation Team members can deliver your card during their visitation. Have un-used cards you would like to donate? Contact Carolee Mech at 455-9384.

Attention all knitters! We are looking for knitters to make prayer shawls that we can pass along to those who are sick in the hospital or at home, and who may like a little extra warmth. Please contact Tonya Church for information on how you can participate.

Meet Pastor Dan Christian - Rev. Christian & Staff

Psalm 126:2 (New International Version) "Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them."

Dan has been pastor of St. Luke since May of 2009. Prior to coming to St. Luke he served a congregation as Director of Christian Education and Church Growth in Bethesda MD. His pastoral vision and congregational leadership style understands that these are challenging and unique times for the church, and for all related to the church. When we face great challenges, more than ever, God needs persons of faith to keep witnessing to God's love, forgiveness and grace. Dan is inspired by people of faith living Jesus' teachings of love for God and neighbor in our community. While ministering in Bethesda, he created a youth television show on teen faith. He also created a weekly Bible study that met at a local Pub and was affectionately called, "Jesus On Tap". Dan's preaching, worship and leadership is shaped by a belief in God's grace that compels us to love our neighbors, even if it means that we are taken out of our comfort zone. This is what he calls, the "integration of Spirit and service". Prior to ministry, Dan was a college teacher in film and media. In 2001, he was called to combine pastoral ministry with teaching and new media. He graduated from San Francisco Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity in 2004. He is married to his wonderful wife Laura Marquez Christian. They have a daughter Tessa and two dogs. They are talking about getting a cat. When Dan is not at church he is likely to be bicycling, hiking or walking the dogs. He and Laura love being new parents. Check out Rev. Dan's Ordination: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaXqToq5k5A

Our regular Sunday school program is back after the summer break! The children will be reading and learning about the first half ( Chapters 1-6) of the Book of Daniel. Daniel was chosen for it's exciting story of King Nebuchadnezzar and it's vivid images. We have used Utube for visuals to supplement and reinforce the reading. Kids start by attending the regular morning worship at 10am and then are dismissed for Sunday school.

[Our Mission Statement] [Our History & Values] [Meet Our Staff] [Our Elders] [Our Deacons]

Welcome to St. Luke Presbyterian Church! We are people from all walks of life, backgrounds, philosophies, careers, and experience who come together to love and worship God, and love one another as authentically and unconditionally as we are able.

We see God's love and purpose for humanity revealed in and through Jesus Christ and try to follow his Way and experience his Grace.

We love to worship and are committed to presenting both classic and new forms of music in our worship. We don't believe in being too predictable and like to try new things in worship. We welcome participation in our services by all those interested.

We care about the community and the world and strive to do what we can to let God's light and love shine from us. We look for ways to serve and help and are always up for a challenge.

We like each other and fellowship around food and fun whenever we have the chance. We promote opportunities of fun and faith for our families, kids and youth.

We are your neighborhood church but there's nothing typical about us. Come discover why St. Luke has long been characterized as ‘the friendly church on the hill'!

St. Luke Mission - Mission

St. Luke's mission is extensive...We support the Presbyterian Church's mission and participate in the One Great Hour of Sharing, the Peace Offering and the Christmas Joy Offering.
We completed a three-phase commitment to sponsor an African Village in Pigu, Ghana. We worked with the World Vision Organization to provide a fresh water well, a school, and a health clinic.
Our families provide meals to Mill Street Center, a local shelter, on the 1st Monday of each month. Mill Street Center provides one-night stays (and longer) for single men and women, 18 years old or older. On-site services include: hot meals, laundry, counseling for jobs, housing, and benefits. Call for bed availability at 11:30am daily or at 8pm for cancellations. Coordinated by Homeward Bound of Marin, Mill Street Center is located at 190 Mill Street, San Rafael, CA 94901, and can be reached at 415-457-9651.Our Deacons sponsor a child through Compassion International in Africa. Her name is Nosuvuko Lekiton Mollel, born 3/2/1991. Our monthly sponsorship pays for food, clothing, school, and healthcare. Nosuvuko lives is Tanazania in the hills of Monduli, home to approximately 145,000 residents. Typical houses are constructed of dirt floors, mud walls and thatch roofs. The primary ethnic group is Maasai and the most commonly spoken languages are Maasai and Swahili. The regional diet consists of maize, beef and beans. Common health problems in this area include tuberculosis, skin diseases and eye disorders. Most adults in Monduli are unemployed but some work as subsistence farmers and earn the equivalent of $5 per month. This community needs proper sanitation, schools and employment opportunities. Sponsorship allows the staff of FPCT Monduli Student Center to provide Bible teaching, medical exams, hygiene education, recreational activities, uniforms and scholastic materials. The center staff will also provide opportunities for project involvement for the parents or guardians of your sponsored child.

The Deacons sponsor Blood Drives 3 times per year through Blood Centers of the Pacific.
We are a part of the local Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Girls Scout family. They meet regularly at our church facility.
ST LUKE DEACONS The Deacons' fund supports a variety of local organizations with donations that are used to aid the distressed and afflicted within our community. The following have been supported: Homeward Bound of Marin, Marin Interfaith Homeless Chaplaincy, Meals of Marin, In Spirit, Marin Abused Womens Service, Adopt a Family of Marin, St. Vincent Kitchen, Canal Community Alliance, Marin Brain Injury Network, Glenwood School PTA Meals for Thanksgiving, and other charitable organizations. We have also donated funds to help individuals within our church community who need a hand. The Deacons also collect food for the Marin Food Bank.

INCEPTION

St. Luke Presbyterian Church began organizing in the fall of 1960. Directed by the Presbytery of the Redwoods, the effort was led by an initial nine families who had a vision for a new church to serve the people in "eastern" San Rafael with a focus on worship for the whole family, with children's programs that were sadly lacking in the local faith community. With dedication and strength during what all discovered was the long and arduous task of establishing a new church, a blessed breakthrough came when the young Church was offered and acquired its current beautiful site overlooking the Bay in June, 1961. Donald Powers Smith, a renowned church architect was commissioned to develop a site plan. In September, 1963, the Reverend Henry Kent was invited to become the congregation's supply pastor to lead the initial ninety members of the St. Luke community. Services were held in a cottage on the property, with Sunday school classes held in a tent nearby pending the construction of a permanent worship place.

The sanctuary was opened October 10, 1965 with a service of dedication to the honor of God's most Holy Name. The litany from that day sets forth the faith of the congregation:

WE DEDICATE THIS HOUSE:

For the Worship of Thy Holy Name,

For the ministry of the Word,

For the administration of the Sacraments,

For comfort to those who mourn,

For help to those who are tempted,

For strength to those who are weak,

For the sanctification of the family,

For the guidance of childhood,

For the summoning of youth to a life of service,

For sympathy and fellowship with the needy,

For brotherhood with all men,

For the unity of all believers in Christ,

For fostering civic righteousness,

For aggression against evil,

For promotion of peace and justice on earth.

FOUNDING VALUES

With these lofty ideals, St. Luke was off to a rousing start. The founders' initial vision was a reality, as St. Luke had an active children's and youth ministry, and teaching the Word to young people was an important part of the Church's mission, particularly since the local area was full of young families. Dedicated members showed their faith by creating beautiful seasonal banners which still adorn our church. The music program was strong, with adult and children's choirs, and an active bell choir. An involved women's association was an active spiritual and financial force, and St. Luke began a tradition of involvement in both local and foreign mission projects. Perhaps most important were the sustaining values of St. Luke: a place all may feel welcome (hence the motto "the friendly church on the hill"), an acceptance of a diversity of opinion, and a more traditional worship setting which members felt best assisted their individual spiritual growth.
