Thoughts From Rev. Dan

In the wilderness you must leave who, what and where we know that is safe or the very least familiar. You set out with the hope and a prayer that God will reveal where, when and how you are needed. To enter into the wilderness is a risk. Uncertainty is high. Fear…real. God is at work in gentle ways in our lives. Fear is redeemed to courage. Loneliness is redeemed to love. Rejection is redeemed to acceptance. Our half lived life is redeemed to wholeness.

Last night we screened "The Tree of Life".  Movies cut a window into our culture and our lives. The film explores the tension between Grace and Nature, or what we call,  Nature versus Nurture.  I was uplifted by the spiritual and emotional depth and honesty of the filmmakers as they explored a family story told through the bonds of love, shame, regret, and pride.

A character in the movie says, "without love, your life will just pass you by".   Said another way, when we are not honest with ourselves and our God-given purpose on this earth, we obstruct peace in our own lives and those who love us.  I was inspired by  the film's ability to shine a light upon humanities heights, courage and truthfulness; as well as the tenderness of compassion, and the ruin of indifference.

Just finished reading Anne Lamott's book, "Grace Eventually".  In  one chapter she talks about the messiness of life. We spend our life our slogging through job loss, portfolio "corrections", diagnosis, aches and pains, and the heartbreaks of life; and it is in exactly these places of muck where we renewed with God's grace.  The muck of life is the fertile soil for grace and being made anew in God's image.  This is good news in deed!

I love that my Pastor reads Anne Lamott! Her honesty & humor are a delight. Here's one of my favortie quotes:
"I think joy and sweetness and affection are a spiritual path. We're here to know God, to love and serve God, and to be blown away by the beauty and miracle of nature. You just have to get rid of so much baggage to be light enough to dance, to sing, to play. You don't have time to carry grudges; you don't have time to cling to the need to be right."

Thank you, Dan, for reminding us that in it indeed in those "places of muck" in our lives that God is able to "renew us" with His grace, a grace that is given whether or not we happen to be on our "best behavior" as you mentioned today so eloquently (and so humorously) in your Sunday sermon.

However, I must say, it is oftentimes hard for us to see above the muck, to see the forest from the trees, to see the light at the end of the tunnel---if I may use these often-used phrases. This is true even for me---and this, despite the fact that I have already repeatedly seen God' work in my own life to make sure "All things work for good...."Roman 28:8.

So, it is good to be reminded.

I am inspired by Rev. Dan's interfaith approach to ministry in Marin. I too read Anne Lamott and knowing a church in my neighborhood gives a message of love, humor, reconciliation and forgiveness is wonderful!

Went to church this last Sunday. Loved the music. The sermon was right on time with everything I am going through.
I will be back soon.

I am going to go out and read "Grace Eventually" and see "The Tree of Life".
