This Sunday

Dear St. Luke Community,

This Sunday is Palm Sunday. Jesus rides into Jerusalem and we wave palms and shout Hosanna. Only Luke’s version of this day has not one palm. Only cloaks. Welcome to Cloak Sunday. Either way, we celebrate. We celebrate even though we know how the week will end on Friday. We praise and we sing for this king who comes to bring peace, as a multitude witnesses all of it.

Luke tells us there’s a multitude there. Just as there was a multitude of angels at Jesus’ birth. And then we hear this; “Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!” (Luke 19:38b) Doesn’t that sound familiar? Those words were spoken at Jesus’ birth with a slight variation. “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” (Luke 2:14)

Peace in the beginning and peace in the end. But if you know much about the challenges that Jesus is up against, you know that peace is far from accomplished. The divisions are great; then and now.

But not this Sunday. This Sunday we declare peace as truth.Through His love for all of us, it is accomplished and finished in heavenly ways we can’t begin to imagine. And so we will praise and sing and wave our palms.

See you Sunday,
Nicole

This Sunday

Dear St. Luke Community,

Remember! Again and again, especially in the Hebrew Bible, the prophets encourage the Hebrew people to remember what God has done for them. Isaiah does this too. And then in a twist, he tells us in this Sunday’s passage, to forget about it.

Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? (43:18,19)

How do we perceive a new thing if it hasn’t happened yet? That’s our creative God speaking. The One who created and is always creating. New things spring forth. At times as though they happened all at once in a vacuum and other times slowly as God hovers. To perceive it is to be open, to listen, to let go. And that can’t happen if we are stuck on old things. Some old things carry guilt and shame. Other old things are stuck on the specific ways things have worked out before, as though we can steer our way towards a solution, by trying to recreate for ourselves something only God can do.

The God we worship creates everything new; in ways, our rational minds would only keep us stuck. To perceive is to let go. To perceive is to move into the imaginable realm of understanding; a place where God can work with us, re-shape us, deliver us, and bring us home. Home may not look the same as it once did. Home may not sound the same or even feel the same as it did before, but it is home nevertheless.

Second Isaiah is simply the “poetry of homecoming.”[1]

Come this Sunday. Remember all the good things God has graced you with. And then forget about it. God is about to do a new thing. Can you perceive it?

See you Sunday,
Nicole

This Sunday

Dear St. Luke Community,

At the beginning of every worship service, after announcements, I invite us to take a deep breath; a moment to exhale as a way to prepare our hearts for worship. But there’s so much more going on in that request that I don’t say. My hope in that moment is that by taking a deep breath, you also exhale all the to do’s of the week; that all the worries and concerns weighing down your body and soul may be released over to the God who wants so badly to carry them for you. It takes at least a breath to accomplish all of that. But without a breath, I wonder if we would even begin to scratch the surface.

The psalmist who sang this Sunday’s psalm knew this all too well. In Psalm 32, like so many other psalms, comes this word; selah. It’s an untranslatable word but the rabbis believe it to mean stop and listen. That’s what we do at the beginning of worship, but it’s also something we could be doing all days, and maybe especially as a Lenten practice. To listen for what’s going on, inside of ourselves, in our bodies, minds, and souls, is to listen for God. To stop and listen for what’s going on around us, in the world and the people who surround us is to listen for God. We cannot escape the presence of God. But we can turn a deaf ear as we convince ourselves we don’t have the time or the energy. Stop and listen. Stop and pause on this journey with Christ and with your whole self, whole body and whole life, listen for God. Selah.

See you Sunday,
Nicole
